--As usual, thanks for letting me eavesdrop on your conversations during class. Some of you mentioned that you didn't do the last blog response in time because I said that you had to write it by Tuesday. If you still want credit (yes, all your blog responses are part of your HW grade), go ahead and comment on Post #4 (even though it's too late for people to revise their papers with your feedback) sometime between now and Monday and I'll still give you full credit.
--Recap of database HW:
--> Choose a specific problem in education (for instance, the fact that some schools are significantly lacking in resources, compared with other schools)
--> Choose to research either causes of this problem or potential solutions.
--> Find two database articles (one from CQ Researcher and one from Opposing Viewpoints) that will help you in your research. Print these two articles and actively read them (yes, that means mark them up and take notes) before the next class. Bring them to class on Monday.

Researching: solutions
Both articles were responding to the idea of making a national standard test and which classes would be affected in positive and negative ways if there were a national standard test.
Both of my articles are about solutions to the education problems. One article focuses on the funding issue and how school boards spend money. There are many groups fighting for different ways to spend the money, and is it being spent on the right things in the right ways. Does funding even determine student learning and achievement? The second article deals with a nationwide standard of teaching what every student should learn in core academic subjects--how to keep students all on the same track, and at higher standards.

Black men fall behind

In both articles, the problem of minorities in schools is emphasized. In "Fixing Urban Schools", the problem is whether the No Child Left Behind program has helped the minorities enough. The NCLB data have shown that low-income and minority children have been left far behind resulting in an unfair education. In "Black Men Fall Behind", it explains why minorities fall behind, mainly because of being side-tracked and also because of the schools they attend.
Outdated Textbooks in NYC Public Schools

One problem of schools in New York City is that textbooks are a scarcity and outdated from the result of the schools being “seriously under-financed.” Students are forced to share books or learn from photocopies. The state refused to grant schools “with more money and a better method of school financing” with the argument that the schools old textbooks are “classics.” The government and court were naïve and ill-informed of the problems of New York City schools.

America has the severe problem of teacher shortages, due mainly to teachers’ low salaries, over-flowing school enrollments, and “the trend toward smaller classes.” In response, “fast track” programs were developed to quickly get people into the teaching field, resulting in unqualified and qualified people to become teachers that would not have done so otherwise. Merit pay systems and bonuses have also been established and offered to try to “bribe” people into the teaching field. State-mandated tests have also been given unsuccessfully to try to improve education quality. There are advantages and disadvantages to lowering certification standards, but what really matters is if our youth are provided with a sound education.

In both of the articles they talk about how the public education has been declining. Much of that is true statistically and a lot of that has to do with the quality of teaching. They believe that if the teachers pay rose then the quality would also rise. I agree with both articles i had read. Ifteachers were payed more it would bring about more intelligent people pursuing a teaching career. This is especially the case in grade school.

solutions to cut the costs of college tuitions include helping aid students in financial crisis through the government. The first article states that even with the increase in tuition costs, "college is still a pretty good deal".

Both of the articles that I've chosen talk about how teachers have a great responsibilty in the students behavior. I agree with the two articles and believe that teachers have a great impact on the students.

In Hernando County, the attempt to solve the overcrowding in classroom crisis is to build a new elementary school. However, the school board is not sure if this would bring adequate relief from overcrowding for neighboring schools in Spring Hill. The school only has enough funds to build two floors but according to a board member, without a third floor, the school will still help alleviate the overcrowding problem.

America's at a crisis with the higher education system since the resent increases in schooling. According to the Advisory Comittee on Student Financial Assistance, cost factors cause about 50% of all qualified, lower income high school graduates from attending a four year college and 22 percent from attending any college at all.

ReplyDeleteThe main argument to this article is that students who do not make an efficient income suffer with the rising cost to pay for their college courses. It is becoming a big cause for the majority of college students.

ReplyDeleteThis article is about the rising cost for college these days and how much debt students are getting into and possible ruining students dream. Now the government are trying to penalizing schools because they are wasting too much money.

Kathy talk about how high cheating at schools has rose higher than ever. Now that internet is very popular, it is much easier to get answers to homework or essays online.
