Dear Class,
For your new blog response, read Rereading America's excerpt from Jean Anyon's Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work. (It should look very familiar since you already started reading it on the very first day of class.) Then, write a well-developed response to one of the following two questions:
1) Why do you think the problem that Anyon describes is occuring? During class today, you did a wonderful job of going beyond the surface and looking at different factors that contribute to what we see in modern education. Likewise, do your best to think of as many things as possible and to explore how different causes might interact with one another.
2) Should all schools be run like professional/elite schools? What would be the advantages of attempting to do this? What would be possible disadvantages?
Due: Before our next class meeting
REMINDER: We're starting Life of Pi Wed, so please bring it to class.

1-I think the topic that we discussed today has the exact same reason to why these children in Anyons article have such horrible schooling. In certain neighborhoods they dont recieve money for their schools or books or keeping schools clean. Maybe parents just don't care like we talked about today. Or the parents have a hard enough time keeping up with their jobs that they have no time to make sure that their kids are doing all of their homework and getting good grades. However on the other side of that, the children whose parents do have money send them to top notch private school and the parents don't really have to worry too much about money and their children have a higher chance of success.
ReplyDelete2-I think that all schools SHOULD be run like proffessional or elite schools. but that will never happen because that costs money that the government and the parents won't or can't provide. However, the advantages would be that all children get a very good education (if they choose to have one... i forgot to metion that it is up to the children to want to better their future). The disadvantages are what i previously stated. Parents dont have money to send their children to private schools for 12 years, then to college for an additional 2-6 more years. Therefor, parents just stick to sending their children to public schools.
#2: Professional/ elite schools seem to make the best out of a child, so I agree that all schools should definitely run like them. First off, the advantages would be that the children get to develop their analytical intellectual powers like Anyon has stated. These professional schools tend to focus more on what children can bring to the table in terms of creativity. For example, the fifth graders in executive elite schools are challenged to come up with the equation for finding a perimeter. These children are focused on logical questions that can benefit any student. The second advantage would be that the children learn to behave naturally. In the elite schools, the fifth graders were allowed to leave the room without permission. But as they grew up in a good school with polite teachers, hardly any of them leave for break until they finish their assignments. However, there may be disadvantages to sticking just with professional/elite schools. Since these schools often have smaller classrooms so that the children receive more interaction with the teacher, the child only meets a small amount of peers. In a working class school, children get to broaden their educational experience by meeting more people of various races, classes, etc.

ReplyDeleteI believe that every child deserves an education that is equal to the elite/profesional schools. Those schools actually teach the children and when they have a misunderstanding about the subject matter the teacher patiently explains it again. That type of education helps build a child as well as expanding their knowledge. A great advantage these types of schools have is that the teachers make their students think outside the box rather than inside the box. An example of this would be when the teacher made their students come up with an equation for finding the area and perimeter of a square as well as a figure of their own. These teachers always want a well explained answer. On the other hand, a disadvantage would be that materials are always going to be needed but not every school would be have these materials available to them. Education budgets will also be skyrocketing due to hiring well-educated teachers. In the end we have to deal with what we can and work with what we have.
I honestly feel that everyone should be ble to get the experiece to go to a professional/elite school. These schools provide better education and disaplance. Teachers are more motivating towards their students. Their always positive and encouraging. Students are more challenged with work and are always pushed to try harder. Teachers make sure they explain things till student have a comfortable understading of the subject.Children are taught better manners and are brought up well to respect everyone. Even though these may all be helpful resources, there are a few disadvantages. Not many families are able to pay for these types of school. If every school became a professional school, the bills for everything would be extremely high. Most children that go to these schools are rich and mostly white, they dont get to see or interact with people of different races or class.
ReplyDelete#2: The complete reform of the education system would be necessary and making all schools should be run like elite schools are run. There are is plethora of advantages if this was to occur, one would be that there would no longer be any bias toward certain schools. Children, no matter what the income of their parents are, would be given the opportunity to compete in the same race as every other child. Given the same obstacles and they would be able to decide what exactly their career path would be, instead of being stuck a box. The teachers of the elite schools should be a norm for all teachers, because these people are the ones who shape the mind of the future. To me this plan would have no disadvantages because equality would be starting in place where its been needed for a while, and nothing but good could come from this.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the problems Anyon is describing is exactly what we discussed in class. The children who live in a working class neighborhood usually attend schools that aren't very prestige. They usually don't have the adequate materials to learn and with both parents working full time, kids usually don't have the discipline they need to do well in school. She also describes how in the uppper class neighborhoods, the kids who attend school there usually do better in education and get a better paying job later in life because they are preparing them for jobs like lawyers, doctors and enginers. On the other hand, the children who are attending schools in poorer areas are usually guided towards jobs which don't require much skills, such as carpenters. If the parents were more involved with their children's education, i think their education and their attitude towards education would improve signifcantly.
ReplyDelete#2: All students deserve the education being taught at the professional and elite schools. It seems as though those particular schools are educating their students more effectively than the other lower-class schools, reaching higher goals; they also are gearing their students for jobs in the business world, or even for leadership positions. All students should have the opportunity to get as intense of an education as they want, which means going to a professional or elite school. The advantages to name a few are better teachers, smaller class size, more creative liberties, and the option to state one's opinion and agree or disagree in a healthy discussion. Those students are getting a well-rounded education, training and learning skills that will most definitely help them reach better and higher paying jobs in the future. A disadvantage one might point out would be messing with the social ladder; different schools have different teaching methods because they are trying to keep the social classes obviously separated. What happens if every child in American schools is getting the best education available, the best teachers, and the best social, academic, and personal lessons possible? They will all want the better, higher paying jobs, and there will be no one left to do the less sought after jobs, the dirty work. I believe the government has set a very covert, yet specific education plan meant to keep each member of society in their rank forever, not allowing children to have a fair educational experience, and not allowing them the resources to become the best that they can be.
ReplyDeleteQ#2: I think yes, all schools should be organized and ran like profesional/elite schools because it gives the students the ablility to be creative thinkers, as well to thinking on their own and "outside the box,". It teaches the students that they have authority over themselves and can attempt anything they wish to pursue in life. The disadvantages may be that a student takes that freedom of his/her authority and doesn't use it to an academic advantage but misbehaves.
ReplyDelete#2. There are always pros and cons in every circumstance. The advantage of having all elite and professional schools is that all students, who are willing to try, will succeed in the future. They will have the best teachers, with the best minds, "like Professor Liu", and a great atmosphere. The disadvantage is not everyone can afford schools like these. Just because they go to an elite school, doesn't mean they will have a better future. I agree with my fellow classmate Graeme. Students have to be willing to try, in order to succeed. I believe it is necessary for all schools to be run like professional elite schools. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a possibility. Elite schools require money and a high scoring test result.
ReplyDelete2)Personally, I think all schools should be run like professional/elite schools because it serves a more meaningful purpose for students to understand and relate ideas into modern, everyday life. It helps the greater good by teaching aspects of education not only through conduct and morality, but disciplines our inner soul for knowledge towards a progressive future. We are the future. So why not make the best of it?
ReplyDeleteThere are many disadvantages to this concept however. Factors such as money, economy, the way parents raise their children to focus on different priorities, and the fact that it's all truly within the children to decide whether they want to make the best of their education or push it aside and take care of other, more important things at the moment is all in a boiling cauldron of negativity.
Although the disadvantages may lie more so within the reality of things seeing the state our nation is in (government, economy, jobs, etc.) the advantages tend to lead the path to a more higher state of education and purpose that will lead to more advanced ideas and concepts. With more educated people decisions will be more adequate for the greater good of the community. Thinking would become more logical; therefore, less impulsive choices would be made. Things start small, and with a better education people will tend to see things differently. It all starts with perception and how they view the world and what they, themselves, want to do about it. With each individual in society playing their part of having a higher state of well being, well I think that's enough to provide a more logical, practical, ideal society that understands each other's ideas more so than just superficiality and lobotomized minds. It all leads to a better flow of things. More education means more understanding means a better vibe that spreads on to the future generations.
2.)
ReplyDeleteRunning all schools like professional/elite schools would be beneficial to the students. By setting professional standards, students would have the opportunity to improve their education and future by learning better quality material and by learning to think, analyze, and apply concepts instead of just copying them down and repeating them. The students would also find their work and learning more enjoyable since it would have more meaning and would be more personal as the curriculum is created around them and not them around the curriculum. The students would be treated in this environment with respect as thinking, creative individuals. By giving the students the opportunity of a quality education, the students would be motivated to learn as much as they could and would actually want to be there in school because of the hope of a better future and a better job as the result of a better education.
One disadvantage to this way of running schools is the lack of support on the parents’ part in many of the lower classes. The students may fall under the expectations of the teachers because they aren’t motivated or being supported at home to improve their education. This may result in a dislike of learning, halting their growth.
Even though there may be some disadvantages, running all schools in a professional/elite way would over-all improve the education of America today, giving students hope in the possibility of a better economy, better jobs, and better lives as a whole.
2) I think if schools were able to run like professional schools then children would be able to learn alot more and be focused more on their struggles. Professional schools would be more strict on their learning and the children would learn alot more from these kind of schools. Since education is key and is strongly forced apon children now a days, professional schools would be a big benefit. The disavantages though is not all parents would be able to afford schools like these so the children would not be able to attend professional schools also because professional school teaches their subjects one way, for some kids it would be hard to learn.
ReplyDeleteQuestion #2
ReplyDeleteI don't think all schools should be run like professional/elite schools since not all students are elite students. There would still be trouble in class where some students pay more attention while others will not really be paying much attetion. To the students who are willing to be there, it will help help them understand subjects better since the material will be taught at a more advanced pace but this will also hold back students who are having trouble understanding the subject and they will be left behind. Also some parents will not be able to afford the tuition fee which keeps some kids from going.
Question #2
ReplyDeleteAll schools should be ran like professional/elite schools. It would put all the students on a level playing field. Some may struggle with material but they can get some extra help with from the staff. The only problem is that there will always be students who struggle. Where will doing this leave them? It would take the students full effort and support from their parents. Not every student can get that from their parents. But if schools don't challenge their students it makes them ill prepared for the future.
2- In my opinion the elite school have so much to offer in terms of education and i do think all school should operate like this because that would make people take education seriously and in this type of school students are asked to analize and use "one's analytical intellectual powers" and this could be good because you're able to use this in everyday life and think more througly before you do something.
ReplyDeleteA problem that could come with all school being this way could be that everyone is going to want to express their opinion and make everything about them and they might not listen to the teacher and just what they want want because they feel powerful.
#2
ReplyDeleteI think its obvious that that all schools should be ran like elite schools. That would make education for all equal. It would give all kids the equal chance to express there creativity and learning skills. A big problem that would come across is everyone being able to afford but if they were ran like public schools today then it would work. This would never happen though anyways cause the government would never fund all the schools to be elite schools especially in the lower class neighborhoods. Its sad to say but even if they did fund all the schools to be elite schools i don't think that enough kids would take advantage of it.
option 2
ReplyDeleteelite schools would make learning a lot better for the kids becase the teachers guide the students a lot better than those in lower middle class. I guess it really depends on the social class though since many wouldnt be able to afford such schools. Especially because most Americans consider themselves as middle class.
