For your new blog response, answer both of the following questions:
1) What is the line/section that struck you the most in the "Appearances" article?
2) Choose one of the following LOP questions and answer it--> What would you do if you were in Pi's shoes? What earlier images/ideas/symbols do you see revisited in the novel now that the plot has picked up and the "main" part of the story has begun? How do you make sense of what has happened to Pi? Why is there a constant flux between positive and negative things happening to Pi after the ship sinks?

  1. 1) What struck me in the “Appearances” article was the second-to-last article. She talks about the fight to overcome homophobia. Instead of using the words “gays” and “lesbians,” the author uses the words “we” and “our.” Therefore, the way the author is writing this article makes it seem as if the she, herself, might be lesbian. I just thought that this was interesting and shed a new light or way of looking at the article.

    2) If I were in Pi’s shoes I would probably freak out. Although I would think about finding food and water earlier than Pi did, I would not think of making a raft. I wouldn’t know how to knot the oars together. Instead, I would take most of the supplies out of the locker and then hide in it from Richard Parker. The locker would keep me warm and safe. I would also pray to God to give me the strength, mentally and physically, to survive if it was His will.

  2. 1) The section that struck me the most in "Appearances" is section 25 on page 477. Vazquez speaks about a couple named Tom and Jan Matarrase who are married and have a child together. They were walking down the street one night in New York when a gang approached the couple and beat up Tom. The gang only did this because they thought Tom and Jan were a gay couple. However, Jan is really a women but just looks like a Tom boy. Jan had to expose her breasts to the gang for them to stop beating up Tom. I thought this section was just one of the most messed up situations. Just because a couple looks one way does not mean they should be treated differently. And if Tom and Jan were really a homosexual couple why does it matter to the gang anyway?

2)If I were in Pi's shoes I would probably have killed myself already. I wouldn't know what to do without my family let alone be out on the sea with a bunch of animals. I like that Pi knows how to do a lot of things and is surviving well with Richard Parker. Overall, there isn't much to do but just hope to survive.

  3. 1) What struck me the most in the article "Appearances" by Carmen Vazquez was the interview that was on 20/20. It was so heartbreaking to just read. Its sad that people have to look a certain way to be respected. I can only imagine what actual homosexual people have to go through. This couple was not even gay and they got attacked. I found it ridiculous that they needed proof that she was a women to stop hitting Tom. Whats it to them if they were gay or not? Its non of their business.

A line that I caught on too was "Dress like a homo, dance like a homo, must be a homo"(473). I liked this quote because its very true. People nowadays are so quickly to judge by apperance that if one looks, dresses, or acts like their opposite sex then they become known as homos. I am not going to lie I am guilty of it as well...as soon as I see a guy dressed "gayish" and talks "gayish" I quickly assume hes gay. I mean most of the time I'm right, but my point is that in our society judging by apperance has become something we all do, and the more people do it the more we find it to be ok. Even gay people themselves judge by appearance so it isn't just the straight people who do it.

    2) Honestly, if i were in Pi's shoes I'd be going insanely nuts. One of my biggest fears is drowning in an ocean. I'd probably have a heart attack. This little boy is extremely brave. I'd be crying my eyes out begging God to keep me safe. Especially being alone with wild animals and watching them eat eachother, thats so scary. I'd need someone to be with me for comfort. I would never make it,and if I did I would be traumatized for life.

  4. 1) The most striking lines in "Appearances" to me was the dialogue and imparticularly, "Fucking cocksucking faggots." "Dyke cunts." "Diseased butt fuckers." Yes I agree sometimes their fun is brutal; very brutal and cruel when you are using this sort of langauge.
    2) Why is there a constant flux between positive and negative things happening to Pi after the ship sinks? I think there are constant fluxes with Pi after the ship sinks because Pi now has the time to realize what has happened and is figuring out the resons why these things has happened to him. Pi is analyzing his situation thoroughly and is figuring out the precise reason for the situations he is in. Pi thinks at first that his situation is far from lucky to be in a lifeboat with a hyena, wounded zebra and near a beagal tiger; he now knows that the men didn't throw him overboard, into the lifeboat for his saftey but to sacrifice him for their sakes. Then Pi concludes that if the men hadn't thrown him overboard when they did he would have surely died and sunken with the ship. Pi realizes all of this with many negative and positive thoughts throughout this short period of time he is settled in the lifeboat and Pi becomes quite grateful in a sense.
